I like your question because I really love waves! I come from a small island and I have spent a lot of my life staring at waves, they look like they are coming from nowhere, or somewhere very very far away!
The waves in the sea are caused by wind transferring its energy to the water most of the time. The molecules of the air blowing interact with the molecules on the surface of the water and this leads to an energy transfer. You can try to make your own waves by filling a pan with water and blowing air across its surface 😉
