I think that everyboy – and that includes you and all your class – are important to science.
Some of you will become scientists. Some of you will have jobs which are directly related to science – like in medicine, or agriculture, or electricity generation.
But ALL of you will have to take part in scientific decisions. What food do we grow? What chemicals do we allow in products in the home? How do we deal with climate change? What areas of research are done in the future?
Scientists all rely on the public to decide what questions are important because which products you buy in the shops and which politicians you vote for (not yet – but soon for you guys) decides what gets done.
I’d never heard of anything like this before and thought it sounded like fun.
I get to talk loads about what I do and learn a bit about what other peopel do. Plus you guys ask questions that i’d never thought of before which is always interesting.
I like trying to explain my science to people. But I have never done this with younger people (less than 18 years old). So this seemed like a great opportunity to see their point of view and (hopefully) answer their questions.
There were a few reasons. I thought being able to chat away to students who are interested in science seemed like a lot of fun. I also didn’t have access to much information about becoming a scientist when I was in school, and I didn’t know any scientists to speak to about what they do. This meant that I never realised that it was an area you could get a job in. I thought by taking part I would be able to make a difference to students who are in a similar position to what I was.
