I’ve party answered this question here /helium-zone/2010/03/what-makes-you-think-that-science-is-the-best/

I was 20 when I realised I wanted to be a scientist, that was when I applied to do my PhD (That’s what I’m currently working on), which is where you train to be a researcher by working on a research topic for 4 years. Before that I was studying Chemistry because I enjoyed it but I didn’t really class myself as a ‘scientist’. Before I was 20 I was interested in how things work and enjoyed reading about a lot of different things. I’ve always just tried to study and work in places I’ve found interesting, which eventually led me to where I am today.

I actually always wanted to be a writer and didn’t always enjoy science at school. When I was about 14 we had a really mad physics teacher called Mr Shirley who was so enthiastic that i started to get interested. I found science G.C.S.E easiest so I just carried on studying science until that was what I was qualified to do. I was never really a plan……I love it though!

I watched science programs on television – and had good science teachers at school.

But I guess I was just one of those people that was in to how things work. That is the basic requirement to be a good scientist – just curiosity!

I realised this when I was about 7 or 8. No – honestly! Before I went to secondary school.

When I was 7 years old, I started cutting up the fish my mum bought home to cook for our tea. I wanted to see what it was made of! So my interest in biology goes back that far. But although I always knew science was interesting, it wasn’t until I was 20 years old that I finally committed to becoming a scientist.
