I want to put together a kit of demo stuff that I can take to schools and talks. At the moment everytime I go somewhere I have to scrounge kit from various professors and reserachers and a lot of the stuff is really old. I saw recently a pulse oximeter that stores data for 24 hours so you can measure your pulse and blood oxygen levels whilst doing all kinds of crazy things then download the data to a computer – I want one! I’d also like a stethoscope and blood pressure monitor as there is loads of physics in how blood pressure is monitored. If theres enough money left over I might splash out on some DVD’s of house which actually has lots of useful information in it (I already have a great clip of an endoscope being used and a pill cam- which is the future of imaging the intestines), thoguh I may not have enough to pay my legal fees when I get sued for copyright infringement!
Short answer – I will give it to the school whose students ask the most interesting question.
Longer answer – I will visit the school, do some fun science demonstrations and talk to the students about the best way to spend the money (it has to be for science communication though – so text book, videos, travel to science exhibits, festivals etc.). Maybe you could invite a famous scientist to your school and I could see if I could arrange it!. Think creatively (but you have to ask a good question first to win the money!
[sorry – this question wasn’t interesting enough to win, but keep trying!]
Oooo, I’ve answered this lots, but in short I want to create a journal club for people to discuss science at whether they are scientists or not. I will also put some of it towards going to a conference where I will present my work. I’ve only been researching actively for 2 years so I’m still very new to science, which means I haven’t had very much opportunity to present my work yet. So I’m really looking forward to it.
