It depends. Sometimes, it is great to show that two different methods can get the same result. Other times, it is a good thing to do the same experiment with the same method as other people to make sure that their result is good and that they thought of everything. Good research is never lost!
Plus, if you are close to finding something and someone beat you up, you would still be a step ahead from all the other people working on it. That is an important thing to consider.
Discoveries call for more discoveries, so you should then think of what you could try to do with this new discovery.
For example, let’s assume you are working on inventing a vaccine for a specific leg disease and someone else is faster to find it. Then, you should start thinking about if the vaccine could also work on a similar disease in the arm for example. Maybe you will be the first one to do it since you were close to find the right vaccine for the legs already.
