Your skin is covered in lots of tiny hair follicles which contain a gland which makes an oily substance called sebum. If this sebum cannot drain out of the hair follicles, then the gland become blocked and enlarged which causes the little bump of the spot to form. If bacteria are also present and get into the follicle then the spot becomes bigger and redder and develops a ‘white-head’ of pus! bleurgh!!

black heads are formed when the sebum reacts with old skin cells to give a black colour. yummy!! 😕
