I think smoking has more bad effects for the people who smoke than for the environment! I’m not an expert, but I think that there must be so much more pollution from things like factories and cars that smoking will make relatively little difference for the environment.
Living locally: streets everywhere are littered with fag-ends. These take a long time to decompose. At least smokers have been banned inside public places, but that just means you have to walk through a fog of 2nd hand smoke to get anywhere.
Thinking globally: The large demand for tobacco makes it profitable to farm it intensively. This will lead to an increase in deforestation. In tropical regions where a lot of tobacco is grown, this can contribute to the loss of rainforests. This not only has effect on the species who live there, but on the global environment. Increased levels of Carbon Dioxide in the atmosphere, can contribute toward the greenhouse effect.
