Humans can get sick for lots of different reasons. Sometimes it’s because bacteria or viruses have infected the body; if you get food poisoning that’s usually a bacteria (salmonella or E.coli), or if you get a cold then it’s usually a virus called rhinovirus. Other times it’s because your body isn’t quite working properly, so for some people with illnesses like diabetes, it’s because your body either can’t produce insulin to break down sugars (type 1), or becomes resistant to it (type 2).
There are lots and lots of different reasons. 🙂

As Hannah said – this is a complicated question – there are lots of different reasons why we get sick. Sometimes bacteria and viruses can make us poorly, but everyone’s bodies are different and will react differently to things. Sometimes your body doesn’t work properly. This could be because something stops working, or because you have a change in your DNA that means it never worked.

Because the human cells cannot fight off the infections in our body this makes our immune system weak. Bacteria and viruses can take over our body in that case and cause severe infections..they also can become more powerful and break down drugs which are used to cure disease!

Sometimes our bodies can’t cope with certain things. Bacteria, parasites and viruses are the main areas that attack, although our bodies can get confused and start attacking organs by mistake – such as rheumatoid arthritis.

In addition to that described sometimes parts of the body don’t develop as they should- for example some people can have a hole in the heart that in the majority of people closes when we are born. Whilst in most people this doesn’t cause a problem in some it can lead to problems.

As everyone has said – so many reasons! The body is incredibly complex and all of your systems rely on others to keep going – it’s why homeostasis is so important. If any of the systems are thrown out of balance it can make you ill.
