try to discover things that others have not discovered so far. It is very exciting to do this. in 2019, I discovered some new bacteria which I named as Acinetobacter terrae, Acinetobacter terrestris. They are from the environment. Acineto=something that cant move, terrae=earth/land, terrestris =from the earth 🙂

The best thing I think is when I help a patient safely get an MRI scan they really need. In the early days of MRI, many patients with things like pacemakers wouldn’t be allowed in the MRI scanner but nowadays we have more information on the risk and newer implants designed for MRI that means we can get them their MRI scan

Last year I did a project where I got to do lots of 3D printing and experimenting, as well as some coding with an Arduino (like Raspberry pi). That was very cool and I really enjoyed the creativity!

Looking after people is amazing and some of the stories and conversations you have are great.
Outside of this I love getting into ‘what is going on here’ looking at heart traces and trying to understand what is going on.

As corny as it sounds I think the best thing about my job is getting to use the area of work I enjoy most to help other people. One of my difficulties in choosing a career when I was younger was balancing the personal enjoyment I get out of my research with what practically I could be doing with it that makes a difference for people. I’ve been quite lucky that I’ve been able to take anthropology and make it more of an applied science within healthcare. I think I would really be struggling to keep my motivation if I worked in a different field and didn’t have that connection to helping people.
