I started working when I was 20 after graduating from university.
I work a 37.5 hour week (day shift) however other scientists within my department work both backshift and nightshift
I’ve been working in science for the last 9 years, and the hours really depend on what type of lab you work in. When I first started working in research for a pharmaceutical company I worked Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, although they were really good if you wanted to move your hours a little bit. I ended up working 7:30am-4pm so I could carry on running my Brownie pack!
Now that I’m in the hospital lab, I’m working shifts. It still works out at the same number of hours per week, but instead of 9-5, it might be day shifts (~7 hours a day) or I might be on a night shift (8pm-8am), or on a long day on a weekend (8am-8pm).
