I won a prize from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences for the best Biomedical Science Day video last year. It was a little glass trophy. Have a look at my profile for a photo of my excited, happy face and trophy! 😀
You can watch the video here, if you’d like, and find out a little more about life as a Biomedical Scientist!

I have not won any awards in my current job. But while at uni I won a few awards for being top of my class (one of them being the Institute of Biomedical Science President’s prize). I also won prizes for best poster for my final year research project and best registration training portfolio (a massive folder full of work from my combined 20 weeks on placement in the hospital labs so I could register as a biomedical Scientist).
Hard work pays off I guess! -

I don’t think I’ve won any awards for my work (yet!) but I was awarded quite a lot of awards at University and during my research job before I started working in the NHS

Yes I have. I will only list a few. My work has helped in developing policies related to food poisoning in EU. I was invited by the ECDC (European CDC) to speak on it and awarded money by them. I was also interviewed by the centre for disease control (CDC), USA to speak on food poisoning. I also published my findings in various scientific journals and have met Nobel prize winners as well in my career. I was also the finalist (runners up) in the outstanding feedback category for teaching awards by the Teesside university where I work. My students kindly nominated me.

I was part of a team that developed an extraction-free method for PCR during the COVID pandemic. Globally, resources for this were running low due to extreme demand. We were nominated for the award by a colleague and I didn’t even know until it was announced that we had won.

Personally I haven’t, but the team I work in won an “Advancing Healthcare Award” for our service called “Wales Infants and childreN’s Genome Service (WINGS)”. This takes all of the DNA from babies and children who are very poorly, and we work out if any changes in the DNA might be making them so ill. This can help them to get the right treatment.
It was in the BBC news last year – https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-61062322

I must be a bit of a dingus as no awards or prizes for me so far, though I did get to present some of my work at a large conference in Abuja, Nigeria, which I’m hugely thankful for! Maybe this year I can win the I’m a Scientist prize? #VoteForDan

I won ‘Inspiring the Healthcare Science Workforce of the Future’ at the 2023 Advancing Healthcare Awards for my work supporting apprentices and getting scientists to do stand up comedy. I was so surprised that I won that when I got up on the stage I ended up curtsying when they handed it to me.
And of course my friends caught it on video. Because good friends always will.
