Hepato=liver, itis=inflammation. It can be caused by certain types of viruses (such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, or hepatitis C), bacteria, or parasites. Besides this liver damage can also occur from excess alcohol consumption
Exactly as Bruno said, it’s inflammation of the liver. (Hepato = liver, itis = inflammation). It can be caused by different bacteria, viruses (hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C), parasites, and it can also happen if you drink too much alcohol.
As others said hepatitis (close spelling!) is the inflammation of the liver. But there are lots of causes. In my career I diagnose the viruses that tend to cause it. Some of them are quite weird.
You might have heard of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C? But there are also Hepatitis A, Hepatitis D and Hepatitis E. Hepatitis D is my favourite because it’s a ‘defunct’ virus and can’t spread on it’s own. It can only spread in people who already have Hepatitis B. It’s an interesting case of a virus hijacking another virus.
