Biomedical scientists will perform tests on blood, urine and tissue biopsies to help determine why patients are unwell. My speciality was Haematology so I would count look at the blood cells to help determine what condition a patient may have. Hematologists also work in the blood bank (transfusion lab) to make sure if a patient needed blood they where getting the correct and safe blood.
The main purpose of my role now is to make sure we have enough staff in the team that are suitability qualified and skilled to do all the tests we undertake in the laboratory. The laboratory often works all night and we need a team of skilled scientists available every hour of the day to preform the tests and provide technical advice to the medial teams. My role sees me working with lots of colleagues in different areas like careers Wales, university and schools about raising the awareness of the biomedical science. Also work with out team to help them undertake new qualifications and get the supportive structure in place for the department to be able to train as effectively as possible.

I have two types of typical days one if I’m working from home or if I’m going to one of the laboratories or schools.
If working from home:
- I’ll start with walking the dog about 7:30am before logging on between 8:30-9:00
- Check emails and calendar for the day
- Start working on any Replies/Reports/Applications/Requests/Projects that are underway.
- Attend any meetings with the team
- Finish between 4:30 and 5:00pmĀ walk the dog before starting to cook
If working in one of the hospitals or schools
- Start at dropping the dog at day car to play with his friends for the day
- Head to the site
- Spend most of the day talking with either students about being a biomedical scientist, giving science lessons or about opportunities that our staff can undertake to learn new skills
- Around the talking I’ll be checking my emails
- One finish will dead to pick up the dog from day care and head home for the evening
-
What I'd do with the prize money:
I’d look to get a portable microscope that i would be able to take to open-day’s and similar events to show what cells and microbes look like down the microscope. this is how my interest in science started so will try hope to do the same with others.
