The human body is a fabulous machine if you think about it, lots of chemical reactions occur every second to keep you doing what you are doing as you read this. But sometimes things can go wrong, and systems inside the body don’t work as well. We have a good barrier to our body, the skin, that help prevent the passage of pathogens (disease-causing organisms) into the body and there are millions of microorganisms living on your skin, the microbiota, that help as well. If this doesn’t work then we can get diseases through pathogens entering our body through cuts or through our noses or mouths. If this happens, a load of immune responses start where our bodies fight off the unwanted intruders, but we tend to feel ill when this is all happening.
