To get energy, our bodies undergo respiration. This process requires oxygen and glucose (sugar) to make energy and also gives out carbon dioxide. So our lungs are designed to take in oxygen and remove/expel carbon dioxide.

So it’s not so much that our lungs need oxygen (but they do as well!) it’s that our whole body needs oxygen to live! Our lungs is the way we get oxygen into our body. Some animals do it differently, like fish have gills and frogs can even “breathe” oxygen through their skin!
