There are both good and bad sides to making a mistake. The main disadvantage of making a mistake is that you lose time. Figuring out what went wrong and how to correct it takes time, so overall results may get delayed. It’s also good to remember that when you make mistakes, you learn a lot of things. When everything happens perfectly, you know only 1 way of doing stuff, but when mistakes happen, you learn several different ways of doing the same thing.

There are many checks and reviewing levels in my research field after I have my results. I have to talk about them and present them. So If I make a mistake it eventually gets caught before the medicine/treatment goes to the patients. But still, if I make mistakes, I have to re-do the experiments, which is very time-consuming and cost money, so I try to plan my experiments well to weed out any errors.

In my area of diagnosing infectious diseases, the most important thing is never to hide a mistake. The sooner a mistake is discovered and rectified, the better. Where mistakes happen, we carry out a review of what can be changed to stop it happening again, and we make whatever changes are needed to ensure that.

It depends on the mistake! Everyone makes mistakes and it’s always best to be open and honest about them when they do happen so they can be corrected as soon as possible. The impact is always worse if you try to hide it and in my job a mistake that is not corrected could negatively impact someone’s life. I look at mistakes as learning opportunities and the team I work in always looks to understand why the mistake happened so we can try and do something to stop it happening again. For example, if someone typed the results of an experiment into a spreadsheet incorrectly, an improvement could be to install software that imports results into the spreadsheet automatically.

Sometimes mistakes just help us design our experiments better, and that’s good. But sometimes mistakes can make our days longer or give us additional work to do. Most of it is a learning experience, the easier jobs are just cleaning up spills but it’s harder when we aren’t sure of what our mistake was that’s caused a different result.

Failure and making mistakes is a part of science. They usually bring about information that helps going forward, so learning about the mistake or failure can be beneficial for the research most of the time! It is best to be open about any experiments, whether a mistake has been made or if it hasn’t worked, to know how to try again better next time.
