I think making sure myself and my family were relatively comfortable, then probably split the rest to scholarship funds to make lab experience more accessible for those who need it for their career, outreach events to inspire the next generation and possibly a spinout company with a great idea for a antibacterial treatment (probiotic based) just so there was some money still coming in to support the other two initiatives (scholarships and outreach).
Use it wisely to support my team. One of things I would like to get it a lung ultrasound machine. We then won’t need to do Xrays and cause radiation side effects such as increased risk for cancer. Wouldn’t that be cool!
I would probably pay the staff and students a bit more, although I don’t have any real control over that. Upgrade some of the equipment so they are more user friendly and probably use the funds to provide some exciting public engagement activities or festivals for nearby schools.
The other alternative is to open up a science themed community pub called “The Lab and Thistle” serving the local community and with science themed drinks and food menu.
