Hmm if we count from secondary school, then I would say 13 years. It sounds like a very long time, but it’s not because remember I completed 6 years of secondary school, then A levels, and my undergraduate, masters and PhD. I could have started working as a scientist after my undergraduate degree but I was so interested in research I decided to do a masters and PhD.
This will be different for everyone as it depends on the number of degrees you do (BSc, MSc, PhD) and how long these courses are. I did a BSc and MSc so only spent 4 years at university. If I did a PhD it would be more like 8 years.

I spent 3 years as an Undergraduate Student and then 4 years for my PhD, so 7 years in total!
