Blindness can occur for a number of reasons: the clear lens of the eye can become cloudy, the clear gel in the eye can also become cloudy, the light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye can become diseased, the retina (on which all those light-sensitive cells are located) can tear or fall off, the optic nerve that carries the light signals to our brain can become diseased or damaged, and the part of our brain that receives those signals can also malfunction. Some of these things can be caused by physical damage (including from other diseases like diabetes), some by genetic diseases, and some by infectious diseases.
