Yes, it is very important to have good working relationships with your team and even better if they are genuine friendships. Socialising outside of work is really good because it removes the stressful environment and helps you bond in a more fun and relaxed way 🙂

Yes, my group is only small but we merge with another group for social events and go for drinks and lunches for birthdays, and always eat lunch together, so it is nice and social.

Yes, they’re a huge part of what can get you through the good and bad parts of the job. We have a theme, which is all the lab groups that look at disease causing bacteria and we meet up for talks and seminars where we present our research and have some microbiology related games. It’s great to have that balance too when things are tough!

Yep, during my PhD and research role in Munich, we did a lot of team building through social events and celebrating even the smallest achievements! It’s really important for team morale and for group bonding in the research group 🙂

Yes! We have staff lunches and tea together which we call as the huddle. We have a night huddle too. It is difficult for all of us to go out together but we try going close by. We have the Watford football club close to the hospital and they are generous and often let us come over for a meal. We also had a bollywood nite precovid to raise money for the baby unit and plan to do it again. It was a great way to socialise but also to meet our baby graduates!
