Yes. Agar is a solid substance which we use in a petri dish to grow bacteria on. I also use liquid growth substances to grow bacteria. We have special bottles to test if there are bacteria in a person’s blood. The blood is injected into these bottles which contain the liquid. The liquid has nutrients in which the bacteria uses to grow up. The bottles are placed on a machine that monitors them continuously. Bacteria gives out carbon dioxide, this is measured by the machine and once there is enough carbon dioxide the machine alarms to tell us there is bacteria in the blood sample.
