I modify the genetic properties of the bacteria cell by inserting a gene encoding fluoresence proteins. So when this bacteria is exposed with heavy metals, the gene will be activated to produce the fluorescence proteins. The proteins can be observed inside the cell by using a fluorescent microscope (the cell will emit light under this microcope).
