Very tough question to answer, as its dependent on the person affected.

It would depend on its cause I presume, depression has so many wide spread causes. In certain situations it can manifest quickly traumatic events triggering it or even certain medication is known to have it as a side effect. In others it’s a slow build from stress, or just life, that eventually gets internally recognised as “depression”.

As to why its so hard to get out of, I would guess that its hard to track progress. Depression isn’t like a wound, there’s no bandage to peep under to see if its healed yet, it takes time to recover, and time to realise that you have recovered.

I hope this was of some help.
