The krebs cycle (also known as the citric acid cycle) is a biological pathway that creates chemical energy (ATP) within the mitochondria of all anaerobically respiring cells.

It involves many proteins and other small molecules and is relatively complicated. Citric acid provides a proton gradient which powers a key protein called ATP synthase. This is an amazing molecular machine, it uses the concentration difference across a membrane to turn a motor. This kinetic energy is used to make ATP from ADP and inorganic phosphate.
