The hypocenter (or, in British English, hypocentre) is the origin point of an earthquake. (The epicentre is the point on the Earth’s surface immediately above the hypocentre.)
Basically, you find the hypocentre by looking at the time that the earthquake was recorded by seismometers in different places. The further away the seismometer is from the hypocenter, the longer the earthquake will take to arrive. It’s very much like finding your position using GPS, but a bit more complicated because earthquake waves don’t travel in straight lines. (I’m sure that some geologist has written a computer program to do all the hard bits!)
