Carbon dioxide is produced when long carbon chains called hydrocarbons are burned. Carbon dioxide is a waste product of this process so its not a case of ‘putting it back’ but finding a way of degrading or storing it.

There are many researchers who work on carbon capture technologies, by trapping carbon dioxide that is produced, it can’t get into the atmosphere and enhance the greenhouse effect (global warming).

Plants and some bacteria degrade carbon dioxide to produce energy. Scientists have been trying to harness this capability but the efficiency of this process is not yet good enough to tackle the vast problem at hand!

There is a lot of funding for young scientists in this area! Interested?
