Just about, at least in terms of career, I think I would be involved in IT. Or followed up with my placement at IBM. Studying physics at university really does open up a lot of doors for you outside of science as well, it teaches problem solving, end goal thinking, team work, all the things that employers in pretty much every field love.
If I had to completely abandon science entirely then I would have opted for English or History, I’m a massive book nerd. I would have loved to try my hand at writing.
Er, not since I was about 12, when I fell with a milk bottle in my hand and sliced open my radial artery. At any time before the second half of the 20th century, I would probably be dead from loss of blood or from infection. Being as it was the late 20th century, my parents drove me [science] to hospital, where my hand was X-rayed [science], I was given a general anaesthetic [science], stitched up, and given antibiotics [science] and an anti-tetanus injection [science] to ward off any infection. I have an interesting scar across my right palm, but everything works.
Apart from the minor inconvenience of not being alive, I could have opted for a career in a different field – at school I was one of those annoying kids who was good at everything, and my headteacher wanted me to do law. I said no. Forcefully. But I could have said yes, and it would have worked: I have an excellent memory, and good speaking and writing skills. (I’d also have been bored out of my skull.)
