My favourite thing about being a scientist is solving problems and finding answers mostly by designing experiments in the lab. I enjoy being in the lab and every day is different!

My favourite things about being a scientist are solving new problems for our customers by finding answers and learning new things from experiments. Sometimes the experiments work, sometimes they don’t, so we have to do a lot of experiments. These days we do some experiments on computers and some in the lab. When the experiments do work, we can use what we’ve learned to make new materials which we can then sell to our customers.

It’s a fantastic privilege to be able to work with something that truly interests you, and to be able to shape your own work around what you feel like doing. Sometimes you decide to do something simply because you’re curious about something that nobody knows the answer to yet! So you allow curiosity to be the driving force of your work, and you get to shape your own projects. Building your own project and seeing it grow into completeness is really amazing!

Great question! For me, I love the process. I feel like a detective, trying to figure out how the world works. Collecting “evidence” in the form of measurements, and trying to fit the clues together like a puzzle, and then sharing my findings with others. Each step is really fun (but sometimes I want to scream at my computer!), but the most exciting parts are the measurements in the field, and talking about my research to large audiences.
