The three closest stars to us are called Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B and Proxima Centauri. Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B are actually orbiting each other in a binary system. Proxima Centauri might in fact be orbiting the other two, but if it is, then it’s year is so long that astronomers are unsure whether or not it does orbit the other two!
In 2016, astronomers discovered that Proxima Centauri has a rocky planet! It’s a bit smaller in size than the Earth and is actually in what’s called the “habitable zone” around that star – a distance which is just right (not too hot or too cold) so that liquid water could exist on the planet. So this is the closest solar system to ours at a distance of 4.2 light years!
