I worked in a pub for 7 years (and we won the great British pub awards in 2015!) It was interesting experience, but I definitely prefer being a scientists.
I also did some work for a few companies looking after websites when I was in A-level. It was fun at first, but it got repetitive and I felt unappreciated for the work I was doing. I ended up quitting when I started my degree.
These experiences motivated me to work hard at university so I would have a more fulfilling job in the future.
Also, the money I saved helped a lot whilst I was at uni.
Good question,
Ryan
I’ve done a handful of things. I designed computer games for a while (we were funded by the council, so they had to be educational). which was fun – it also taught me a lot about computers and coding, which is super useful for literally every other profession. At university I’ve had some part-time jobs, helping the IT guys, invigilating exams, that kind of thing. But nothing has been as exciting or as rewarding as being a scientist. My work every day contributes to something which is much bigger and more important, and that’s really nice 🙂
I have worked in a gift shop (at an Arboretum near my parent’s home) and while I was at school I had a summer job at a small airfield, working in the hanger on light aircraft, which was a lot of fun!
I worked at family takeaways for a while packing boxes, I’ve worked as a waitress at a restaurant, I’ve worked (and still working for) a games company giving them scientific advice on games and I’ve done a bit of science teaching
I’ve done work developing software, but it was for scientific purposes, so I guess I was a scientist then too. Otherwise I think I’ve been lucky enough to always either be a scientist, or to study in order to become one.
