Alice Harpole answered on 7 Mar 2016:

Gene banks store biological material from a wide range of crops and animal species in order to preserve genetic diversity. In the event of significant climate change or global disasters (whether natural, such as a supervolcano explosion, or man-made, such as nuclear war), then gene banks would be crucial to the survival of the human race. I therefore think that they are a necessity given the uncertain nature of our future.
