Hi,
Thanks so much for your question. I have always been interested in fish, I decided that I wanted to be a marine biologist at 10 years old, but before that as a toddler, I wanted to be a mermaid. I studied Marine Biology at university and went on to work as an Aquarist at two public aquariums. While I was there I learnt a lot about looking after fish.
As a zebrafish facility technician, I get to use the knowledge I have to assist in important biomedical research. I make sure not only that the fish are healthy, but that the water is healthy too, and if I didn’t do that then the researchers would not be able to do their work.
To answer your question, I didn’t set out to be a zebrafish technician, I didn’t look for the job and have it in mind as my perfect career, but when the job came up it seemed like something I would be good at and could do well, would use the skills that I already had and give me many more opportunities, so I applied.
Now I am a Zebrafish Technician I really enjoy it, and I would recommend it to anyone who was interested in animal care and welfare, or wanting to start or continue a career in science.
