Great question! Sleep is vital in maintaining abilities such as speech, memory and our ability to think, so basically, we need to sleep to let our brain rest. Long periods without sleep make people grumpy, forgetful and clumsy. 11 days is the longest that anyone has gone without sleeping (a man called Randy Gardner), who began hallucinating (seeing things) after 4 days!
There was a recent scientific publication that says that we need sleep so that the brain can get rid of garbage (metabolites) accumulated during the day when it is very active.
