I think that pollitial and social issues take priority because people will not be interested in saving the environment if they are starving and desparate to make a living.
There are a lot of problems in all of those things that need solving. In my personal opinion though, the environment is something that if damaged beyond repair… well. It’s ruined isn’t it? It’ll take years and generations to fix, and y’know that’s not something we want to leave to our grandchildren is it? I personally don’t want to be thought of as part of an irresponsible generation of people (because of course it’s always the bad stuff that’s remembered), but equally political and social problems can have far-reaching and long-lasting effects, they’re kind of more dynamic and dependent on the times aren’t they and you don’t want people starving and that sort of thing… I like balance really, so I think all problems need to be fixed, but y’know, the environment could be one of those things that once broken can never be fixed again, especially if loads of animals go extinct.
I’m not qualified to answer that – is anyone? – but to me it seems that political and environmental problems are intertwined. Pollution and dwindling resources have a lot to do with overpopulation, which has a lot to do with poverty – I remember reading that the quickest way to bring birthrates down is to make sure girls, in particular, get a decent education.
I think inequality between rich and poor countries, and between rich and poor within some countries, is the world’s biggest social problem and it contributes to most environmental problems too. But I’m not an expert on this at all.
I think that all of them are very important. In the short term i think its probably social, things like unemployment and social mobility. In the long term however i believe that it is enironmental issues that will affect us, these range from climate change, to growing populations, to running out of oil.
