The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded for outstanding discoveries in the field of life, science and medicine. It can be awarded for finding a cure for a disease (Emil Adolf von Behring for he development of a vaccine against diphtheria) or for discovering a new understanding of how the human body works (Watson and Crick and Wilkins for their work discovering DNA structure).
