The short answer is yes. Mud is a mix of small particles, many of them are produced organically and some of that is indeed poo! In our experiments we don’t use poo, but we do try to replicate its effects. The biological bit of mud tend to be quite sticky so we need to add this stickiness into our experiments. We use Helmans mayonnaise for this, well some of the ingredients for low fat mayonnaise called Xantham Gum. Its also used in chewing gum! This is sticky and acts like poo and other biological components within mud and makes our experiments more realistic.
mud is made from a complex mixture of grains (these can be clays, silts and sands – essentailly fragments of older rocks) and biological goo and materials – some of which is alive (bacteria etc.) and some dead….and yes some of the materials are poo!
