Yes. I think all scientists dream of finding something new and that finding helping a host of people. I think there are risks in everything we do, but we have to be careful and manage these as best we can.
I think we all do, there are things I want to achieve scientifically (I want to understand what my protein does!) or for my career (I would love to lecture to undergraduates) or just in life (I want to live in another country).
And all of these things have risks, either physically (my parasite technically could infect me although its pretty unlikely) or personally (what if I dont like living in another country?) but for me, I think that these risks are worth it.
I want to help people with Parkinson’s disease & I’m going about it 2 different ways:
1. to figure out more about what happens in dying brain cells in Parkinson’s
2. test chemical compounds to see if they are good treatments for Parkinson’s
Right now the risks that I’m taking are to come up with & do these experiments all by myself & I need to count on them working! If they don’t, I’ll be in trouble when my job ends in just under 2 years! Fortunately, things are looking good so far — exciting even! Knock on wood 🙂
