Area 51 is a government facility in Nevada, USA, and is strictly classified.
There are a lot of rumours surrounding Area 51, most famously about contact with extraterrestrials or the dissecting of aliens and alien space crafts. The Roswell incident in 1947, which is a few hours down the road from Area 51, was publicised as an alien encounter, later to be corrected as a crashed weather balloon.

Area 51 is most likely an advanced aircraft testing facility, with the alien stuff more of a distraction than anything else.
