It was by accident! I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I was at school, I wanted to be a PE teacher at one point, I then moved on to wanting to become a physio. Unfortunately my grades weren’t good enough for a place at university, so I looked at what else I enjoyed. Fortunately for me, one of the universities I applied for physio at offered me a place on their medicinal chemistry and biology course. I really enjoyed the course and wanted to work in industry designing medicines. I went into industry for a bit and made what I thought was a temporary switch to university and have been here ever since. I can’t imagine doing anything else than science now.
Very similar story to Rachel actually. I also sort of fell into science at uni whilst studying on a business degree. It wasn’t challenging me and I didn’t find the content interesting, but fortunately I had chosen a “wild” module in forensic science and from the first lecture I was absolutely hooked! I’ve never looked back since 😁
