It depends what I am doing. If I am in the laboratory then I need to wear my lab coat and sometimes gloves. If I am working outside then I need to wear clothes appropriate for the weather conditions and sturdy shoes as I’m not usually on level ground.

Normally I don’t have to wear any equipment, but if the samples I am looking at are hazardous to prepare then I would wear gloves, a lab coat and lab specs.

I’m mainly inside and not in a lab, so I just wear my normal clothes. The only exception is when I’m dealing with something gross, like imaging a sliced-up eyeball… then gloves and a lab coat are a must!

If I’m analysing then lab coat, goggles, and sometimes gloves, depending on the chemicals. When I’m working with fine powders I have to wear a mask so I don’t breathe the particles in (we’re all used to wearing masks now though hey?!). If I’m using the lens attachment on the Raman spectrometer then I also have to wear special goggles that block out the laser light. When I’m teaching outdoor crime scene mapping (always in the depths of winter!) then lots and lots and lots of layers! 🥶
