My job is a Lecturer at a university where I teach forensic ecology (how to use the natural world to solve crimes, think insects, plants, microbes and soil) and taphonomy (what happens to the body after death) amongst other things. I spend 99.9% of my time teaching or doing teaching related work but also do research (looking at how we can use insects to solve crimes), training practitioners (mostly local crime scene investigators) and consultancy (I get asked to go and find out where flies that are causing problems are coming from and how can they be managed)

I am both a PhD researcher and also a science communicator.
So I spend half of my time doing research in the laboratory, specifically looking at indicators to estimate the postmortem interval (how long since death) so currently I am working with lots of stinky bacteria, and going out to schools and to the community to share and teach about all aspects of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) which includes forensics (which I love).

I work as a lab technician in a university, I primarily look after the Scanning Electron Microscope and help staff and students analyse their samples. I get to look at samples that are nanometres, viruses and bacteria, plants, fibres and gunshot residue, pretty much everything and anything as long as it is vacuum compatible (dead and dry!). I also get to teach students analytical chemistry and microscopy, which I really enjoy. I sometimes get to do research, I am interested in fake medicines, gunshot residue, I also help colleagues with knife damage and fingermark recovery.

Iām a research-focused university lecturer, so my job involves mainly carrying out research and supervising my research teams, meeting with collaborators to plan future research and discuss ongoing projects, writing research papers and presenting research at conferences, training research students, and teaching undergraduate students about data science and artificial intelligence.

I do a little bit of everything – I’m a PhD researcher, a postgraduate demonstrator, an outreach ambassador, and an NHS employee. I’m also currently working on a government grant, but I can’t tell you what it involves I’m afraid! š¤
