      My job – my job is to do science research

      So I’m paid to do my experiments on bacteria – trying to work out how they sense

      I’m also paid to do some teaching at the university so part of my time and my job is teaching undergraduates

      I’m an astronomer, so I use telescopes to observe things – mostly stars in my case, as I try to weigh them, and things like black holes that we sometime sdiscover orbiting around stars.

    Technically I’m an astronomer, but nowadays I’m mostly involved with education rather than doing research, so I spend a lot of time in schools, giving talks about various spacey things. For about 3 days a week I teach at a university, then I spend about a day doing admin stuff (applying for grants etc.) and another day a week visiting schools, training teachers or doing “outreach” events. These are usually things like science festivals, talks to science/astronomy societies or adult education calsses.

    I also have an “evening job” teaching Chinese martial arts, and when I was at university this was a useful way to get jobs working as a bouncer on the door at various student nightclubs in Southampton – always nice to earn a bit of money when you’re a poor student, but a bit embarrassing when you’re having to escort some of your friends out of a club for being a bit “boisterous”…!
