I knew I wanted to do PhD because in my final year at University we all do a research project, and I really enjoyed doing something more specialist, and wanted to do more science that was brand new and that I’d discovered myself.

My project was all about high-pressure crystallography, you basically take a crystal and trap it between two diamonds, and then X-ray it. From that you can work out where all the atoms are, then you move the diamonds closer together, squashing the crystal, X-ray it again and see how it’s changed.

I loved the project so I looked for a PhD with somebody who did a lot of high-pressure crystallography. Sadly my project hasn’t ended up with me doing much of it, because it isn’t that useful for the materials I’m making! I still really enjoy it though 🙂
