Nuclear fission is the process by which the nucleus of an atom, typically a heavy one, is broken into smaller nuclei, plus some other particles, as well as energy. In nuclear power plants, the energy that is emitted during nuclear fission is used to heat water, and the hot water is used to produce electricity.
