• Question: What does PH.D. mean ?

      It stands for Doctor of Philosophy, but it’s just a fancy name for the course I’m doing at university.

      When you got to university at age 18, you do a degree. This works a bit like school in that you have lectures (a bit like lessons) and then exams.

      After this you do a Ph.D., where you work like a full time scientist, and you are taught as you go by a supervisor, who is a full time scientist. There aren’t as many Ph.D. students so it’s easier (in theory!) to do the teaching. It’s like a halfway step between being a student and an independent scientist.
