Hi,
I would say don’t put too much pressure on yourself with school (or hobbies if they are intense!). You should have enough time to do some different hobbies after school/at weekends and it can be good to take your mind off schoolwork for a bit. Maybe in the run up to exams spend a bit more time revising if it will make you feel better, but it’s often better to be relaxed, well rounded and have regular breaks. If you have a packed schedule then be organised and try to set a target for what you want to achieve each day, each week etc.
I didn’t do a sport, but I did a lot of dancing and music (and now at university I do dancesport which is competitive ballroom and Latin, and play in the University wind band).
The most important thing I found at school was to be very organised, so always having my homework diary up to date, knowing exactly what I had to do for when. If you can get into a regular timetable it really helps too, and try to do as much as you can on the day you get it — it’s so much easier when you can remember the lesson!
It’s great to have hobbies outside of school/work, I love it as a break when I can completely switch off from thinking about my science. I hope your sport is going well 🙂
I did athletics for a really long time, and then switched to kayaking in the later years of school, and did theatre every Wednesday afternoon. We had Wednesday afternoons off for sports and hobbies, but we used to have school on a Saturday morning.
I always had a diary that I had my school work due in or exams marked in and competitions or weekends away, so I always knew what was coming over the next few weeks, and that really helped. I still use it now, except it’s digital.
My mum supported us a lot with our hobbies and extra curricular when we were young, and as we got older we got public transport or cycled.
I’ve found that having hobbies that allow me to switch off thinking about work (I sail, dance and sometimes ski or surf) are actually really helpful in helping balance my work, and when I come back to working after a break I’m more efficient and get more done.
