• Question: do you think being a scientist was always meant to be.

      There’s a feeling that I always wanted to do it, but it definitely wasn’t inevitable. I’m not sure I go along with things being ‘meant to be’. The inherently random nature of our quantum universe forbids it! Also I think people have a choice in where they want to be.

      I moved house a lot when I was younger, and I sometimes think about what I might have decided to do if I had stayed at some of those other schools with different friends… I used to be good at a lot of different subjects at school, and I thought about going to art college for a while. But I think, looking back, science was always the main thing I was interested in – even when I was really young and it was mostly dinosaurs!
