A rainbow happens when light from the sun is reflected and refracted by the raindrops in the air. The different colours are caused when the white light is broken up into the different colours of the spectrum.

For rainbows to happen you need light and a reflective surface (which are the droplets of water). When the light hits the droplets of water it breaks down in a spectrum of different colours which are very impressive.
