@ Rebelheb I can’t begin to tell you how important it is for people to learn about science from the start. Everything you do – computers, TV, gaming, cooking, transport, music…. – is all as a result of science, not to mention industry, the economy, medicine, security…. All of it is science based. In fact I’m struggling to think of anything that doesn’t depend on science. Even the arts (cinema, theatre) need science. Added to that the wonder of the thing – how amazing it is to understand how things work, whats up in the sky, the universe, the big bang, the Earth, where we came from, where we are going. I could go on and on and on – in fact this is already the longest answer I have given to a question so far. And, doing science opens up all sorts of possibilities for your future. If I can make just one person a science convert by doing this event, I will have succeeded.
The more people that understand and appreciate science, the better. The most important thing to realise is that scientists are just regular, normal people. Anyone can be a scientist, and projects like this are great ways to get that message out there and encourage people to take an interest in science.
I think that communicating science is just as important as doing the actual research, and projects like this are absolutely vital to encourage more people to take up science so that the science of the future is even better and brighter than the science of today.
I find that a lot of people get their curiosity driven out of them really early, even if they are super curious about something. This program seems like a wonderful way of getting right at the curiosity that’s at the base of ever scientist. I think that getting people to understand science at a basic level helps on a lot of fronts – just in terms of having a “that doesn’t seem right” meter that’s well calibrated can be a huge help every day.
The people we’re talking to on here, you guys, are the future of science, and even if we just change a few people’s minds about studying or working in science then we’ve done a good job!
I hope you can tell that everyone here is passionate about what they do, and that could be you guys too, making a difference to people’s lives and solving fundamental mysteries 🙂
