There is a definite answer to this, that the world will ‘end’ when it is swallowed by the sun in about 4 billion years. As stars get older they start to use helium as a fuel instead of hydrogen, and when they do this it makes them swell up to become red giant stars. The Sun will probably get to be about as big as the orbit of Mars.
This is a nice picture showing the expected life cycle of the Sun, and where we are now. When it gets to 9 or 10 the Earth will have been swallowed up:
I don’t know about 2012 but I am amazed at the amount of fear it has instilled in people. Every few years, there is some crazy person who claims that the end of the world is near – the last date for the world to end was actually May 21, a few weeks ago. They do this for their own financial benefit (like, “Give me all your money and I’ll make sure you surive” oir even “let’s scare people so they watch our movie”) or because they are seriously delusioned about the state of the world.
